Contractor Hiring Tips
- Check for proper licensing - Make sure the contractor you are considering is licensed with the Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation. www.state.va.us/dpor/
- Ask for insurance certificates with adequate coverage - contractors should be able to provide you, upon request, with proper insurance certificate. Contractors that are inadequately insured may leave the home owner liable.
- Insist on a written contract - include square footage of the project, depth of asphalt, and a description of the work to be done.
- Warranty - Ask for a written warranty.
- Door to door solicitors - BEWARE of door to door solicitors, offering "in the area discounts."
- References - Ask for references, check with the Better Business Bureau. Mistakes can be costly.
Check more than the dollar amount when you make a decision on your next contractor. |
